German president approached by heads of Over the Rainbow Zionist movement at ceremony in Bremen, asked to help bring home Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed and return remains of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul.
Steinmeier met on Wednesday with the head of Over the Rainbow Zionist movement, Tzvi Avisar, and the movement's head in Germany, Rabbi Natanel Teitelbaum, at the inauguration of a new memorial site at the Bunker Valentin in Bremen, in memory of 1,400 victims, some of them Jews, who were forced to work there to build submarines for the Nazi regime.
The German president, who gave his sponsorship to the event, was asked by Avisar and Teitelbaum—on behalf of the families of fallen IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul—to help by putting pressure on Hamas to return Goldin and Shaul's remains as well as Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who entered the Gaza Strip of their own volition and were captured by Hamas. Over the past weekend, the Third Annual International Presidential Conference of the Zionist Movement Over The Rainbow , was held in a congress center in Berlin.
Israel President, Mr. Reuven Rivlin and minister for Strategic Affairs MK Gilad Erdan congratulated in the opening session in a broadcast video from Israel's capital, Jerusalem. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent as well a special missive to the heads and participants of the conference.
The Conference was attended by, among others, "Israel Today" newspaper chief editor Mr. Boaz Bismuth, Senior Journalist & Political Correspondent of Israel's Channels 12 and 13 Mr. Amit Segal, and Ms. Revital Yakin-Krakovsky, Director for Strategy and Communications, Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs. To the conference arrived the presidents of the movement, that confirmed at their presence Zionist projects in the diaspora, worth 15 million shekels.
The Zionist General Council will convene in Jerusalem, October 30th through November 2nd 2017. The convention theme is - Updating the Zionist Movement’s Constitution. Over the Rainbow Movement representatives in the Zionist General Council are Rabbi Netanel Tatelbaum, city rabbi of Bremen, Germany and the Movement’s president in that country and Dr. Eyal Mizrahi, the Movement’s president in Italy.
On the days of November 9-12, 2017 The Third Presidents’ Convention of the Zionist Movement - Over the Rainbow will take place in Berlin, Germany.
This year’s convention theme will be “The Struggle Against the New Antisemitism” and will be attended by the presidents of the movement chapters covering 14 countries from 5 continents. During the convention the international and regional work plans will be ratified.
In addition to the above, a host of Israeli and European diplomats and media people will attend as well as notables such as Mr. Donald tusk, president of the European Council, Mr. Boaz Bismut, Chief Editor of “Yisrael Hayom” and Amit Segal, Senior Journalist of Channel 2 Israel.
On june 4, as part of the annual Celebrate Israel Parade in Manhattan, New York, hundreds of pictures of the fallen IDF soldiers Lieutenant Hadar Goldin and Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul were carried down by marchers as part of the initiative of Over The Rainbow movement's New York branch president, Omer Gamlieli.
Two months later, Over The Rainbow unified Jewish congregations of all denominations to dedicate the Shabbat in their community to the memory of Hadar Goldin, three years after his tragically loss, and to the campaign to repatriate Hadar Goldin for proper burial in Israel.
